Contractors are now preparing bids to build the new fire station #5 at 225
West Gayle. This station will replace the existing station 6 blocks west at 701
West Gayle. The site is situated immediately behind KRPV Christian Television
Station at the intersection of Gayle and South Main. The new station will
incorporate larger living quarters, larger truck room, firefighter parking,
public parking and ADA accessibility. It’s proximity, one half block from main
street, will enable quick access north and south on main street which is most
often used for emergency response from this station. Built in 1965 the existing
station was constructed perpendicular to the corner, negating any future
expansion. At the time the station was built, it was designed to house only one
fire truck and designed for only two firefighters working each shift.
Since 1983, three firefighters work each shift and two apparatus are
currently housed in this station. This new station is designed for future
expansion of the living quarters and an additional truck bay if necessary.
The bids for this station will be opened Tuesday, August 29, 2000 at 2:00
p.m. The bid opening procedure will be conducted in the city council chamber
located at City Hall, 425 North Richardson. After a review of the bids, the fire
committee meeting of September 7, 2000, will recommend to the city council the
bidder meeting the requirements of the city. At the city council meeting of
September 14, 2000, the council will award or reject construction bids
recommended by the fire committee. Construction should begin within two weeks
after the bid award.
