WHY IS THERMAL LAYERING CRITICAL TO FIREFIGHTING?

• Hottest air and gases rise, allowing for ventilation and making lower levels safer for firefighters.

• Improper water application to unvented areas disrupts the thermal balance and causes smoke to steam and circulate within all levels of the fire area.

• Disruption of thermal layer creates a burn hazard for firefighters.
