COMBUSTION

• Combustion is defined as the rapid oxidation (resulting in fire). Oxidation is not always rapid. It may be slow, or it may be instantaneous. Examples:

• Slow oxidation - rust

• Rapid oxidation (combustion) - can occur in two forms: smoldering fires and steady state or free-burning fires.
